At the age of six he was seriously scalded by a kettle of boiling milk, accidentally spilled over him. He was disabled for one year. He came to Erie in April 1868 and left for Nebraska in August 1869. He took up a homestead six miles north of Guide Rock in 1873 but moved to Philip County later on. He died at the home of his son, Nick, at Fiat, near Howard, Kansas, June 6, 1927 and is buried in Severy, Kansas. He left four boys, Rudolf, Fred, Nick and Charles. He went to homestead north Of Guide Rock near his sister Elizabeth in 1869, later moving to Phillips CO, Kansas.
