He is the only Newton Fay in California in the 1900 census. His occupation is listed as goldminer. His birthdate is listed as January, 1850.
Following is from a document concerning family history written by Justice Kashevaroff (date written unknown):
"At first it was more difficult to get a line on the Fays. All I knew about my grandfather, Newton Murray Fay, was that he had been born in Vermont around 1850 and that he died in Oakland in 1901, when my mother was only 3 years old. I couldn't locate him in the LDS Library in Menlo Park or the National Archives in San Bruno. There were hundreds and hundreds of Fays in Vermont in the 1860 and 1870 census records.
By a stroke of good fortune I found a book in the Sutro Library that listed my grandfather, Newton Murray Fay, and through it I was able to trace his lineage back to John Fay of Marlborough, Vermont - who was born in England in 1648 and came to America when he was 8 years old. The book is "THE FAY GENEALOGY - JOHN FAY OF MARLBOROUGH AND HIS DESCENDANTS" by Orlon P. Fay. If you would like to peruse the book, you can do so at the Sutro Library, 480 Winston Street, San Francisco - a block or so behind Stonestown. Or you could ask your library to borrow it for you. The number is CS 71 F282 1898. I am enclosing copies of the pages that I found most interesting.
Newton Murray Fay was born Dec. 8, 1849 in Richmond, Vermont. His first wife was Julia Fay who was born Feb. 7, 1854 in Burlington, Vermont. Her father was Julius Fay, born August 23, 1825 in Richmond, Vermont. Her frandfather was John Fay, born July 31, 1783 in Bennington, Vermont and her her great-frandfather was Nathan Fay, born Nov. 15, 1760 in Richmond, Vermont. He was also Newton Murray Fay's great-grandfather. They had one daughter, Susan Fay - and possibly another daughter, according to the Fay book.
Grandfather Newton married our grandmother, Clarissa Grace Chapman on September 13, 1891 and died in Oakland on Dec. 7, 1901. I knew virtually nothing about my frandfather except that he was extrememly heavy, possibly 400 pounds. I learned from my cousin Newton that he was a very successful jeweler and that Aunt Hazel had some quite valuable pieces that she had gotten from him, including a diamond bracelet. He had previously been a large scale farmer around Sacramento. He went to Alaska during the gold rush there but apparently found no gold. He was a big time gambler. It was rumored that he had killed a man. He was also a Knight Templar and Newt has his sword. He left Grandma an estate of about $250,000 which only lasted her a few years. After Grandfather's death she married 'William W. Harper, a no-good, and he was instrumental in squandering her fortune. She spent most of the remainder of her life working in a cannery as head forelady.
In the Fay genealogy, our link is to Newton Murray Fay, my grandfather. On the next to last page, you will find a listing for Nathan Fay, No. 1737. His first son was Nathan Fay, whose 4th son was Newton Murray Fay, my grandfather. Newton's first wife was Julia Fay, a cousin. He married my grandmother, Clarissa Grace Chapman, on Sept. 13, 1891. You can trace backward, page by page, to John Fay of Marlborough, Vermont.
Included are brief sketches about some of the most noteworthy Fays. You will note that John Fay was killed at Bennington, Vermont Aug. 16, 1777, during the Revolutionary War. Alberta, Sue, Martin and Ellen and I will be visiting Bennington in September. We hope to be able to locate his grave while we are there."
Newton married Clarissa Grace Chapman, daughter of Asa Owen Chapman and Clarissa Justice, on 13 Sep 1891 in Sacramento, California (married by Rev. C. P. Massey).41 (Clarissa Grace Chapman was born on 10 Nov 1869 in Lassen County, California,41 died on 23 Jan 1945 in San Francisco, California 41 and was buried in Colma, California 42,41,43,44.)
