He had gone to California during the gold rush. Died under mysterious circumstances. Family tradition says he and a partner had a gold mine and he was murdered by his partner.

Stephen married Mary Jane Scott, daughter of Peter Scott and Charity Stewart, on 5 Jan 1839 in Jo Davies County, IL.⁵² (Mary Jane Scott was born in Mar 1818 in Richmond, Ross County, OH,⁵² died on 1 May 1895 in Hanover, IL ⁵² and was buried in Elizabeth, IL ⁵².)
