• He served in the military Enlisted in 37th Foot as a drummer on 8 Oct 1860 in County Limerick, Ireland. Nicholas CLAMPETT enlisted in the 37th foot at Limerick on 08 October 1860 aged 18, making his birth year, around 1842 (Regimental number 859) He was 5 foot 4.5 inches tall and was paid one pound ten shillings for joining. He arrived at the Depot of the 37th (Colchester) on 01 November 1860. At this time the regiment was in India, arriving back in 1861 and then being based at Aldershot. Nicholas appears to be a musician, as next to his name is written 'band' in the muster records of 1864 and 1865. • He travelled with his regiment on the ship "Blenheim", arriving in 1866 in India. • Cause of Death: Cholera, Aug 1872, Bengal, India. 7 From the Ecclesiastical returns of baptisms, marriages and burials for Bengal within a week in August 1872, at Mean Meer, Nicholas and his two sons died of cholera; Michael aged 5 died 15 August 1872, and was buried the following day. His 8-month-old brother Bernard died and was buried on 17 August 1872. Nicholas died 22 August 1872, aged 29 and was buried two days later. The Roman Catholic army chaplain Rev. Angelo Curtis performed the ceremonies. Nicholas married Mary Ryan on 26 Dec 1865 in St Michaels, Limerick, Limerick, Ireland. (Mary Ryan was born before 1865.) |
