• He served in the military as Private in Company A, 26th North Carolina Regiment enlisted 27 Mar 1862. 140

• Military: Wounded and captured at the battle of Gettysburg, 1-5 Jul 1863, Gettysburg, South Dakota. 140 He was hospitalized for a time at Gettysburg until transferred and confined at David's Island, N.Y., July 24, 1863.

Paroled at David's Island, he was transferred to City Point, Va., where he was received September 16, 1862 for exchange.

• Cause of Death: Gunshot wound, 5 Jun 1864, Hospital in Lynchburg, VA. 140 Company records indicate that later Pvt. Campbell died in a hospital in
Lynchburg, Va. on June 5, 1864 of a gunshot wound. The date and
place where he was wounded was not reported.
