Broke his back twice in his lifetime and still continued to work on something or another right up until the time of his death. Loved the game of baseball. Coached a team on the eastern shore of Virginia. Was an avid gardener. During his younger years he was active in the methodist church in Greenbush Virginia.

He was listed on the District of Columbia census of 1900 as a lodger in the home of John Loor on Bladensburg Road. His sister Jenny Woodward was also living on Bladensburg Road with her two children and her brother Harry and sister Lottie. She was a widow and her next door neighbor was Benjamin Loor. The Loor family were good friends of the Clampitts.
