Irish Roots of the Australian Clampett Family
Establishing a family
Joseph and Ellen’s first child, John David, was
born at Binalong in 1864, and their 8 subsequent children were born in the
districts surrounding Burrowa - at Gundagai, Grenfell and Burrowa. The
Clampett children were:
- John David born at Binalong NSW in 1864
- Joseph Henry born Gundagai NSW in 1866
- William Cornelius born Grenfell NSW in 1868
- Mary born Grenfell NSW on 24 November 1869
- George Nicholas born Burrowa NSW on 19 December 1871
- Rebecca Ann born Burrowa on 3 January 1874
- Margaret J born Burrowa on 14 April 1876
- Henry Joseph born Burrowa on 9 May 1878
- Ellen Mary born Burrowa on 21 April 1880
All the children were baptised
within weeks of their birth, the records of which have been collected from a
variety of churches in the districts surrounding Burrowa. They provide a
record of the number of moves made by the family during the early years of the
marriage.
Baptismal sponsors to the children invariably have strongly Irish names. For example, for William: Michael and Mary Kelly; for Mary: Richard Noonan and Bridget Curry; for Margaret: John Dunne and Bridget Ryan; for Henry: Michael John Ryan and Catherine Hayes and for baby Ellen: her brother John and Mary Anne O’Brien who was the midwife who delivered her. With the exception of John Dunne who was the parish priest, and Catherine Hayes who was Ellen’s niece, daughter of her sister Mary, nothing is known of any of the sponsors.
The family settled in Burrowa sometime in the early in the 1870s. In 1874, the local newspaper carried an advertisement[9], which stated that Joseph Clampett was the Manager of the Manson and Co., Drapery Store in Brial Street. Manson and Co had drapery stores in a number of the towns where Joseph and Ellen lived between 1864 and 1874, in particular Grenfell, where the family was living in 1867.
