The following is an abstract of military pension information obtained from the National Archives. David Clampitt appears on company Muster Rolls for Co. H, 120th Regiment, Indiana Infantry as follows: muster-in roll for Indianapolis, Indiana, March 10, 1864; present on muster rolls for May, June, July, and August 1864. Note that he was sent to field hospital on October 13, 1864/sick. Company Descriptive Book for Co. H, 120th Reg't Indiana Infantry shows the following: Age - 40 years; Height - 5 feet 11 1/2 inches; Complexion - Light; Eyes - Blue; Hair - Dark; Where born - North Carolina; Occupation - Farmer. Enlisted - Feb 24, 1864; Where - Columbus, Ind; By whom - J.R. McCoy; Term - 3 years; Remarks - Died at Tilton, Ga, Oct. 29, 1864 caused by the cars running over him. Mch 31, 1865 sent his final statements to Adjutant General Washington D.C. Statement made by Thos Richards, Captain, indicates that at the time of David Clampitt's death, he had last been paid on June 30, 1864 and has pay and subsistence due him for traveling to place of enrollment and whatever other allowances are allowed. Clothing received amounted to $47.71. He had received $100.00 in advanced bounty and was due an additional $200.00 bounty. The following is excerpted from a "Commissioned Officer's Certificate of Soldier's Death" made by Thomas J. Richards, Captain of Company H of the 120th Regiment of the Indiana Volunteers on April 2, 1866: "...while in the service of the United States, and in the line of his duty, [David Clampitt] was run over by a train of Government Cars and killed all most instantly. He was being transported from Atlanta Georgia to Nashville Tenn, by order of Major Gen. Sherman." The following is excerpted from a "Commissioned Officer's Certificate of Soldier's Death" made by Thomas J. Richards, Captain of Company H of the 120th Regiment of the Indiana Volunteers on August 6, 1866: "The said David Clampitt had received a furlough in order to go to his home, and whilst on his way he was accidentally killed by falling from rail-road cares, at the town of Tildon, in the state of Georgia on the 29th day of October 1864." Copy made by Clerk of the Circuit Court of marriage return that states, "I certify that I joined together as husband and wife David Clampett and Polly Kindred on the 6th day of March AD 1845. Jeremiah Cole D Gospel" The Office Return this statement was attached to was issued March 4, 1845, parties' names were David Clampett and Polly Kindred, Remarks column shows "Oath of Bartholomew Kindred." There are four "Affidavit as to Births of Minor Children" for the children of David Clampitt and Polly Kindred. The following are the people who made the affidavits that they were present at the birth of the child, in what capacity they were present, the child's name, and the date the child was born: Alexander M. Thompson of Clearspring, Jackson County, Indiana; accoucher; Clarinda Clampett, b. January 13, 1851; John Clampett, b. December 17, 1853; Scott Clampett, June 12, 1863. All were born in Jackson County, Indiana. James C. Wells of Clearspring, Jackson County, Indiana; accoucher; James Clampett, b. December 9, 1858; Woodson Clampett, b. November 29, 1861. Both were born in Jackson County, Indiana. Thomas J. Richards of Clearspring, Jackson County, Indiana; accoucher; Edward Clampett, b. September 3, 1855 in Jackson County, Indiana. Creed T. Wilson of Pearidge, Jackson County, Indiana; accoucher; Enoch Clampett, b. February 23, 1849 in Jackson County, Indiana. Statement sworn to on June 16, 1867: "Mooney P.O., Jackson County, Indiana, June 12, 1867. I, Thomas J. Richards, late a Captain in the 120th Regiment, Ind., Vol. Inft. state on oath that David Clampett, late a private in Co H 120th Ind. Vol. Inft. was sent to the hospital sick, at Atlanta Georgia on the 3rd day October 1864. That the Regiment to which he belonged [next word illegible] to the 23rd AC and was ordered by Major General Sherman to join the Command of Major General Thomas at Nashville Tenn. Major Gen. Sherman ordered Atlanta to be evacuated and private David Clampett of Co. H 120th Regt. Ind. Vol. Inft. not being able for duty with his regiment received a furlough from the hospital and was put on a train of open cares at Atlanta Georgia to go to Nashville Tenn via Chatanooga Tenn. The cares stopped at Tilton Georgia to layover for some purpose and when the cares went to start Clampett was ordered to git on the train, which order he attempt to obey. Being much swolen with dropsy, he sliped and fell off of the cares and before he could be got off the rails the cares moved off running over him and killing him; he was in the discharge of his duty. Thomas J. Richards, late Capt. Co. H 120th Reg. Ind. Vol." Facts from "Widow's Application for Army Pension" made on August 6, 1866 by Mary Clampitt of Clearspring, Jackson County, Indiana: Mary's age is listed as forty-one. She and David Clampitt were married on March 6, 1845 by Jeremiah Cole, a Minister of the Gospel. Her maiden name was Mary Kindred. Her children are listed as: Enoch Clampitt, aged 15 years; Clarinda Clampitt, aged 13 years; John Clampitt, aged 11 years; Edward Clampitt, aged 9 years; James Clampitt, aged 7 years; Woodson Clampitt, aged 3 years; and Scott Clampitt, 1 year old. She appointed Ralph Applewhite, Esq., of Brownstown, Jackson County, Indiana, as her attorney. Two witnesses, Thomas J. Richards and Alexander M. Thompson, swore that they had known Mrs. Mary Clampitt for twelve years and knew her and her husband, David W. Clampitt, to have lived together as husband and wife for nine years before he went in the service, and that she has seven children under the age of 16 years who were born in lawful wedlock (also lists the children and their ages, noting that Enoch is now over the age of 16 years). "Affidavit as to Identity of Names" sworn to on June 15, 1867 by Tarzwell Vawter and Jurdan Boyatt that Mary Clampitt was the wife of David Clampitt and that for many years they have often heard her called Polly Clampitt or Mary Clampitt interchangeably. Mary Clampitt apparently received a pension of $8 per month commencing as of October 29, 1864, plus $2 per month, commencing July 25, 18866, for each of her children until they reached the age of 16. The "jacket" showing the pension rates of pay was returned to the Interior Department for filing on May 15, 1899, bearing a stamp with the word "Dead". [Mary Clampitt died January 28, 1899.]
