General Notes:
CLAMPITTs ~ CLAMPETs in ALABAMA Posted by: ANNE BOONE Date: May 01, 2000 at 01:28:10 In Reply to: NEED SOME HELP WITH MY CLAMPITT'S by Rikki Love of 172 Rikki, Have you corresponded with Dolores Lombardi? She is very knowledgeable on the CLAMPITT ~ CLAMPET families.
Where in 1817 ALABAMA was your JAMES L. CLAMPITT born? Jackson or Madison County possibly? As you know, there weren't too many CLAMPITT families that had ventured into Alabama by 1817.
My connection is from RICHARD EDWARD CLAMPITT (1748-1820) born in Delaware, died in Forsyth County, North Carolina; and with his second wife, ELIZABETH MASTEN (1758-1849)also Delaware and then North Carolina.
Their son MATHIAS MASTEN CLAMPET married REBECCA NICHOLSON and they too ended up in ALABAMA.
And, their daughter, CATHERINE ANNE CLAMPET married my Great Grandfather HARDY HOLMAN SANDERS in 1835 Madison County Alabama ~ a ceremony probably for the CLAMPITT family, because they then drove their buggy to Jackson County for a second ceremony, which was probably for the SANDERS clan.
In 1837, Catherine's father, Mathias died in Madison County, I believe ~ it's late and I'm going on memory.
However, the important part is that I know Catherine had other relatives close by, if not in Madison or Jackson Counties of Alabama, then around Lost Creek in Franklin County Tennessee.
Considering the dates, it is possible that your ELISHA CLAMPITT was a nephew to my RICHARD E. CLAMPET. Or, possibly an unrecorded grandchild of RICHARD and DINAH PRATT, his first wife. OR, an unrecorded child of RICHARD and ELIZABETH, as my fading memory tells me that they had more than the six recorded children. (Mathias, Mary, Richard, Elizabeth, John and Ezekiel).
Or, you might check this site ~ I haven't looked at it as yet, but perhaps a clue might be there. <http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Estates/4555/rclampitt1.html>
There has been talk within our family that CATHERINE CLAMPET, my Great Grandmother, had half cousins and/or cousins around during the CIVIL WAR whereby some were Unionist and others were Confederates. Which caused her problems, especially after a Union soldier killed her young thirteen year old son "Pink" at home ~ she buried him and then baked poison pies for the next ones that stopped by their home.
Her son, ANDREW MASTEN SANDERS, born 1837, was my Grandfather and he was among those that moved west to Arkansas and Texas as well. And, since your CLAMPITT family was in the same area ~ just may have been associated with the same group. Something to think about. Annie
May 22, 2000: Rikki, Your christian names do not necessarily ring any bells; however, your counties in Alabama are where my Grandfather, Andrew Masten Sanders, visited relatives back then. Those Clampet/Clampitts nearest my line were just in Jackson, Marshall and Madison, Alabama it seems, at this point in time.
I do recall an "EARP" married into my SANDERS/CLAMPET line from the information given me by my Grams (1869-1969) as I had asked if that EARP was related to the famous WYATT EARP, which she did not recall.
Feel certain the Alabama Clampet, Sanders and Earp families all knew one another, though possibly related distantly. Grams generation kept close contact with ALL relatives down to seventh cousins or more. I remember her reciting names and birth dates of distant relatives like they were her own children. Unfortunately, most of her information to me was lost in a flood back in the early 1970's.
As our Clampets were also in Delaware back in time, I will keep your information at hand should I find any connection. Annie
