John was in the Civil War and the Spanish American War. He was in Co F 2nd IN reg in 1847 and served one year in the Mexican War. In the Civil War he enlisted in Co I 29th Iowa Regiment, was a sergeant, and served through the war. He had a military funeral.
The 1860 census shows that John owned real estate valued at $1000.00 and had $400.00 personal property.
The 1884 ed. of "The History of Gutherie County" says that John came to Gutherie County in 1853 and lived in the log cabin which he built at the time of the settlement. He resided there until 1875, when he built a new residence on "one hundred and eighty-eight acres of good land". He married Clarissa C. Henderson, 27 AUG 1854. She was the daughter of one of the original settlers.
The 1840 census of Lawrence County, Iowa, shows a household of "Henderson/Woody", with one male 20-30 yrs and one female 20-30 years. It is obvious that the Woodys and Hendersons knew each other in Lawrence County before coming to Gutherie County.
