James was a school teacher for several terms in Gutherie County, but taught in Dakota for two terms. He worked for 8 years on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad and was the bill clerk in the freight office for three years.
In 1894 he became the Republican candidate for the office of Clerk of the district court, was elected, and took office 1 Jan 1895.
He and Tacy were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
They moved to Des Moines in 1901. He represents an accident insurance company.
