• He served in the military. Civil War -
James enlisted in the Civil War in Mt. Sterling, IL. in Oct. 1861. He was 18
years old, dark hair, grey eyes and born in Decatur, IN. Company K 10th IL. Calvary. H e furnished his own horse and equipment. Made a corporal March 1, 1865 in Company D 10th IL. Calvary. Was in hospital in Helena, Ark. in July 1863. Mustered out in November 1865 in San Antonio.

James married Artemesa Kindred, daughter of James Hamilton Kindred and Judith Beasley, on 25 Jan 1844 in Indiana, Decatur County. (Artemesa Kindred was born about 1820 in Kentucky, Fayette, Lexington and died before 1847.)
