Ellen Clampett Drotts and August Drotts living with Ellen's family on the 1880 census.

"The Genealogy and History of the Drotts Family" page 2
"...Though left an orphan in a new land at the age of fifteen, the opportunities were many and my father (August E. Drotts) became a successful Christian man. He and his brother Charles came to Marshall County Kansas where they worked for farmers. Here he met Ellen Clampett.
They were married May 27, 1880, and came to Rooks County, Kansas in a covered wagon. They homesteaded northwest of Stockton. Later they sold the homestead and proved up on a timber claim on which the Government required them to plant so many trees. This was S.E. 1/4 of Sec. 3, Twp. 7 and they received Timber Culture Certificate No. 2285, signed by President William M. McKinley, on May 14, 1900. Here they built a sod house in which five of their six children were born. John, the oldest, was born on the first homestead.
August made application for his United States Citizenship in 1881, and received his final papers on March 9, 1886, in Rooks County, Kansas.
In addition to the required trees, they planted a large orchard of fruit trees which grew and produced for many years.
The family attended church and sunday School at rural school houses. Family worship and table grace was a family custom.
Mother passed away shortly before their Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary, but Father lived nearly a quarter of a century longers, most of which was spent in our home.
My brother Earl now owns the family farm.
The following poem, clipped from a newspaper, was given Ellen Clampett as a proposal of marriage by August E. Drotts, 1880.
THE BASHFUL YOUNG MAN'S LOVE COUPLETS
I am somewhat a bashful young man,
But will do all the talking I can.

I am a man who makes no pretension,
But present myself as I'll mention.
I'm not blessed with much of this world's wealth,
Though I'm blessed with pretty good health.

I'm ambitious and capable of making
A living by trading and working.

I'm one who neither boast or tell lies,
But such men as them I do despise.

I always tell the truth, that you'll know.
I'll always with you to church go.

Tobacco I neither smoke nor chew,
Or drink at saloons as others do.

I tell you I've been loving you hard
Say, will you give me some kind good word,
Oh, if I were yours and you were mine,
Unto you I'd be so good and kind.

Oh my dear Miss, will you marry me.
As I can't without you happy be.

I can live with you and happy be,
and that till death should part you and me.

I want a kind and loving wife,
One that will cherish me all her life.
One than can cook, wash, sweep, sew, and spin,
And always keep her dress nice and clean.

Say! will you now an answer give,
And now with me long and happily live?

My love to you shall always be true;
and it will ever remain so too.

If you were rich with lots of money,
My love wouldn't be for that, my honey.
and you are the girl at my will,
To fill the requirements of this bill.
