Walter C. Kindred
Also known as Walker C. Kindred. Was 5'11" tall, black hair and hazel eyes. Military papers said he was born in Lexington KY even though his father was listed on the Henry Co. KY tax list the year he was born. Married Mary Jane some time after father's death. Was in Judith's household in 1850. Bought a rifle in the estate sale for $ 16.00. Sold all rights and interest in the undivided half of 130 acres left to him by his father for $100.00 in March 1852. Mary Jane signed the deed with him. Fathered 2 children by her. According to military papers he married Nancy Hastings in Calhoun Co. IL in Sept. 1854. Mary Jane later married John Clark and had more children.

• He served in the military in 1861 in Illinois, Pike, Pleasant Hill. Walter enlisted for 3 years service in the Civil War in Aug. 1861 at Pleasant Hill, Pike Co. IL. Mustered into Company C 10th MO. Regiment at St. Louis arsenal. Was in action at Missouri Ridge in 1863. Was wounded and in hospital at Chattanooga, TN. Mustered out in Aug 1864 as a corporal. Volunteered again in Mt. Sterling , IL as a substitute for John Goodwin in Feb 1865. Mustered out again at Springfield, IL in May that same year. Lived in Naples 2 years, Pleasant Hill 7 years , Bellview 2 years and since that in Pittsfield, IL. Walter married Mary Jane Simpson in Illinois, Brown, Mt. Sterling. The marriage ended in divorce. (Mary Jane Simpson was born about 1835 in Illinois, Brown, Mt. Sterling.) Walter next married Nancy Aufield Hastings in Sep 1854 in Illinois, Calhoun County. (Nancy Aufield Hastings was born on 2 Jun 1827 in Indiana and died on 1 Aug 1899 in Illinois, Pike, Pittsfield.) |
